Home again, home again, rig-a-jig-jig

I'm back. My great uncle (my dad's uncle) and I left his place in Aurora, TX, just outside Ft. Worth Thursday afternoon to go to my cousin's wedding in Colorado. We spent the night in Dumas, just north of Amarillo, then got to CO Friday around lunch time. It took us about 11 hrs total. It was nice to split it up into two days. However, I just got back from driving all day today. Because I have class and work tomorrow, we had to drive the whole 11 hrs today. Then I had to drive an additional hour from his place to ours. Oh well, the things we do for family...

The Weekend
Friday afternoon and evening were spent checking in to my cabin, helping set up some last-minute decorations, and lounging around. While the wedding party (not me) had the rehearsal and dinner, the rest of us had dinner together. Some family I hadn't seen in 5 or 6 years, others more like 10. It was nice to see everyone. I also got to meet friends of my aunt & uncle's who were there for the wedding. One guy had been in pilot training with my uncle and my dad. They're all still friends.

My cousin Sam - the one who is my age and just graduated from the Air Force Academy - and I went to the local watering hole, the Dog Bar, Friday night because I heard that a blues band would be playing. We had a couple drinks and made fun of the drunks dancing...and the band was really good. The bar had like a theme night or something. They came out with two boxes of random hats and handed them out. It was hillarious. There were hot pink wigs, green furry hats, miner hats, a sombrero, a lady's sun hat, a crash helmet, and more. It was so funny. Some girls were dancing but left around 10:20 - that is, all but one. The other girl was just sitting there by herself (with no drink) for like 30 minutes or something. Finally, she came over and said those other girls wanted her to give me their phone number. That was funny: I'm from Dallas, they're small-town Colorado chicas, I'm leaving in two days, not to return for many moons. Oh well...it's the thought that counts, right?

Sam recently bought himself a Chevy truck and a Yamaha motorcycle. They're nice. He and I woke up around 8:30 Saturday morning for him to take me on a ride on the bike. It was so much fun riding through the mountains. After getting back, his brother (Jeff), Jeff's girlfriend, Sam, and I decided to go to breakfast in nearby La Vita. Sam rode his bike and the rest of us were following in a van. Sam was a bit ahead, so we were surprised to see him standing on the side of the road talking to somone when we came around a turn. As it turns out, the front tire slipped out from under him and sent him a-slidin. Luckily, no one was coming the other way and he was wearing a leather jacket and helmet. He cut up his knee pretty bad and his bike was a bit damaged, but it turned out well, considering what could have happened. This was at 10:00, the morning of the wedding.

Jeff and his gf went back to get their folks and Sam's truck while I tended to the wounds. I used Jeff's undershirt as bandages. His parents took him to the hospital in not-so-nearby Walsenburg, where the doctor said his kneed "looked like it went through a meat cleaver." Sam got 6 stiches and made it back just in time for the wedding at 2:00. He and his brother were suppsed to be the ushers, but I filled in for Sam since he was injured.

Anyway, the wedding was nice - a small chapel in a small town with about 150 people. The couple drove off from the reception in a 1911 Ford Model T. That was neat. But it took 3 tries and 4 or 5 guys pushing to get it up the hill from the reception hall! The rest of the family and a couple close friends had dinner together that evening which was nice.

All in all, it was quite the eventful weekend. Now, I must eat dinner, study for my test tomorrow, and sleep. It only feels like 7:50, but I'm still tired.

Check my Flickr page frequently for pics. If you check it, they will come...as soon as I put them there.
