New Tobacco Law

Today, President Obama signed a new bill into law. Essentially, a bill that gives the FDA the power to regulate the tobacco industry. Click here to read the full text of the President's remarks.

What do you think about this bill? I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, it makes sense for the FDA to regulate such things. Tobacco is a drug. It's the Food and Drug Administration. Makes sense. But to continue putting limits on advertising and packaging seems silly to me. If we really, truly believe that tobacco is that bad, then why don't we ban it outright? I don't care one way or the other. But if it's bad, let's get rid of it. If not, stop pretending it is. Can I get an "amen"?

I'm not a fan of tobacco, but that doesn't matter. The great thing about America is that people have the freedom to choose and the government doesn't constrict those freedoms (or at lease not in the past...when we weren't becoming socialists). I notice the government crreeping up in increasingly bigger ways regulating how we live life when I don't think they may not have the right to.
An example is the setting up traffic radars/cameras that automatically ticket you if you are speeding. Yes, it is the law to go the speed limit, but I don't think a machine has the right to give me a ticket. I'll take one from a real person, thank you.
This Tobacco law is no different. Tobacco may not be safe for the person using it or the people around them, but its a tiny infringement of freedom in my opinion. I am opposed to it, no matter how much healthier it may make the US, I don't think it is right. The people should decide on issues like this. Good topic!
