Ben, The Other-Starter

I am, by no means, a self-starter. By nature, I procrastinate, invent excuses, and avoid things I should be doing in life that I don't really want to do. I am, however, an excellent other-starter. I'm great at getting other people to do things. Why do you think I changed my major from engineering to marketing?

In any group of people I've been associated with over the last several years, I was the guy who said, "hey, let's go _____!" I was the one who got the ball rolling. I was the one to call everyone to set a time/place to have lunch. I am currently in the process of pestering some friends to set a date to go to a Rangers game. And it just occurred to me that I've been doing this so that I can have a social life.

I want a social life. I need a social life. I care about a social life. But the problem is that it takes too much effort. And I quit. I just don't have it in me any more. I'm tired of being the other-starter all the time. I want a break. I want someone to call me for a change. I want someone to randomly invite me to lunch on Tuesday. I want a bunch of guys to pile out of a truck and tell me that we're going camping. Now. Is that too much to ask?

Later that day...

Crap. Now I'm all alone. That was a bad idea. Pride blows.

* * * * *

Is there room for more than one other-starter in a group? It would appear not.

I've played that game. Always a loser. Can't recommend it. Instead, best to embrace being the "Other-Starter!" Enjoy the gift and go do things!!
