While out at a local Denton establishment, my housemate and I saw a show on the TV that basically looked like a reality show in a women's prison. One of the inmates caught our eye because she was being examined by a doctor...because she was pregnant.

Which raises the question: what happens to prison babies? When a woman gives birth while incarcerated, what happens to her child? Does she raise the child in prison? Do they force the child to be put up for adoption? Can the mom send the baby to live with friends or family? I have no idea. It's an interesting question.

What should happen to the baby? I'm not sure I know that either. On the one hand, I'm inclined to say, "It's your own stupid fault for getting knocked up and then getting arrested. Clearly, you can't handle another life in this world," and make them give it up for adoption. Doesn't the fact that the mother is in prison clearly demonstrate that she is not capable of raising a child at this time? On the other hand, it's her baby! She should be able to send it off to friends or close relatives or foster care or something and get the child back once she's out.

But what if she's in for 10 years? or 50 years? or life? I have no idea. Anyone know anything on the matter?

I do believe they take the child and place it in the care of CPS and foster families. I'm pretty certain that forced adoption is a prominent outcome to the situation.

interesting. you learn something new every day. that sucks for the kid. but i guess there's not much more you can do about it.
